Your electric bill can be broken down into 2 parts. The supply (power plant) and the delivery (power lines). In some U.S. States, regulation allows you to choose your own energy supplier to increase competition. The utility company owns the power line that connect directly to your house, so you don’t have any choice in companies in that area.
Things to look at when comparing energy rates:
- The alternative supplier’s rate compared to the utility company’s rate
- The length of contract if there is one
- Is it fixed rate or variable rate?
- Early cancellation fee if it’s a contract
- Renewable/Non-renewable Sourced (preference)
